Audi Rallye-Icons at the Eifel Rallye Festival 2014
Ingolstadt, July 23, 2014
A total of 30,000 spectators are expected when the historic rallying scene convenes in Daun from tomorrow for the Eifel Rallye Festival (July 24 – 26, 2014). Daun is the German mecca for anyone who was a fan of rallying during its glory days in the 1970s and 1980s. One of the highlights this year will be Audi Tradition’s appearance at the event. AUDI AG’s heritage department will be in attendance with rally icons Stig Blomqvist and Harald Demuth and is bringing an Audi Rallye quattro A2 and an Audi Sport quattro, both 1984 Cars of the Year.
It was exactly 30 years ago that Audi celebrated its greatest triumph of the rallying era. At the hands of Stig Blomqvist from Sweden, the brand with the four rings won both the manufacturers’ title and the drivers’ title in the World Rally Championship. Meanwhile, at national level, Harald Demuth won the German Rally Championship for Audi in the same year.
Demuth will be taking part in the special stages in Daun behind the wheel of an original Audi Rallye quattro A2. Stig Blomqvist will be giving his all in an Audi Sport quattro Rallye.
The Audi Sport quattro was the advancement of the Audi Rallye quattro A2. This successful model, which had an output of 360 hp, claimed two World Championship manufacturers’ titles and two World Championship drivers’ titles. The Audi Sport quattro (420 hp) was designed to give Audi the leading edge over its competitors. It featured a wheelbase reduced by 30 centimeters (11.8 in), earning it the nickname “the short quattro”. The vehicle appearing in Daun took second place in the 1985 Monte Carlo Rally. Its then crew will be making a repeat appearance in Daun: the event is being organized by Christian Geistdörfer, long-time co-pilot to Walter Röhrl, who will be guest of honor.
