The history of Audi’s activities in China
On August 13, 1988, AUDI AG and First Automobile Works (FAW) signed the contracts for the production of the Audi 100 under license in Changchun.
Assembly of the Audi 100 from imported kits and the establishment of a customer service unit begins at the FAW plant.
Audi becomes a ten-percent stakeholder in the FAW-VW joint venture established in 1991. Volkswagen holds 30 percent, FAW 60 percent.
The joint venture begins production of the Audi 200 (an updated Audi 100 with V6 engine).
Production of the Audi A6 in China begins. The model features an extended wheelbase and was developed especially for China.
Market launch of the Audi A4 produced in Changchun.
Market launch of the next Audi A6 generation. The extended-wheelbase version produced in China bears the new name Audi A6L.
Establishment of the Audi Sales Division (ASD) as an independent marketing and sales unit within the FAW-VW joint venture.
Market launch of the Audi A4L, the first extended-wheelbase version of a premium automobile in the upper mid-sized segment.
Audi China established in Beijing.
Market launch of the Audi Q5 produced in Changchun. The vehicle is the first premium SUV produced in China.
In October 2010, Audi and FAW celebrate the delivery of the one-millionth Audi to a customer in China.
FAW-VW and AUDI AG announce the construction of a second plant in Foshan in southern China, with completion scheduled for late 2013.
Market launch of the new Audi A6 L.
Opening of Audi City Beijing and the R&D Center Asia in Beijing.
