Research and development
Audi has been active in local car development in China with its Chinese partner FAW for 25 years. These activities include country-specific trials based for example on local geographic requirements, such as desert worthiness. The joint venture is also involved in the prequalification and testing of locally sourced parts.
Audi developed special long-wheelbase versions for the Chinese market (Audi A6 L and Audi A4 L) in close cooperation with FAW. The additional space in the back addresses the preferences of Chinese customers. Audi was the first premium manufacturer to include a long-wheelbase version explicitly for the Chinese market in its range. Since 2008, Audi engineers have been successfully developing infotainment solutions tailored to the requirements of customers in China, Japan and Korea, including a touchpad for the navigation system. This allows the input of handwritten Asian characters.
On February 1, 2013, Audi established a Research & Development Center for Asia in Beijing. Its task is to develop specific local adaptations to meet the product requirements of Chinese and Asian customers. The R&D Center in Beijing is part of the global Technical Development division of AUDI AG and reinforces the integration of innovations from Asia. The R&D Center Asia is housed in the new Audi China building in Beijing’s art district.
The new Research & Development Center has increased the number of developers in Beijing from 40 to over 200. The laboratories and workshops cover a total floor area of around 8,000 square meters (86,111 square feet).
